My friend and I went thrifting the other night. It was an almost magical experience because we went without children! Between you and me, I can’t remember the last time I went to a thrift store without a baby strapped to my body and a toddler in a cart! First stop was a spot I’d never been to, but let me tell you this folks it was HUGE. I’m talking old grocery store converted into thrift store big. Even though I went looking for upcycles and craft supplies I was quickly sucked in by the aisles and aisles of little girl clothes, seriously enough to outfit my children for years. Once I pried myself free I was able to focus on the task at hand. After a couple of hours I walked out with four bags including some yarn, an awesome puzzle (which I will post my plans for later), tons of stuff for the kids for Christmas and a bag of five wooden blocks and dowels. The blocks intrigued me, because I have no idea what they were originally intended to be, but I loved them, and at $0.50 it was a done deal.
Twice a year my hero Linda over at Craftaholics Anonymous hosts a gift exchange. It’s like a secret santa for crafty folk. I love getting presents and mail so it is a win win for me! I have been trying to figure out what to make for my partner and I think this is just the thing to get my package started! So without further ado, my first photo tutorial!
- Start with bizarre wood blocks with holes drilled in the middle
- Paint blocks with a vintage white craft paint
- Cut paper to fit (I used paper scraps and they weren’t wide enough to cover the whole block)
- Mod Podge paper to painted blocks.
- I used my Slice machine (Making Memories Slice Cordless Design Cutter Machine Starter Set) to cut out letters, and then I Mod Podged them to the top of the paper.
I feel like they are still a little plain jane, but I don’t know what to add…any suggestions?
*Update* I ended up mixing a little glitter with some mod podge and applying that, and it was amazing!
