So until recently my most popular post was this one, about the easiest jeans patch ever. I am bringing this technique back again to show you how this is good for so much more than just jeans! Take for example my son. I pick him up from school and he looks normal, we get home and he puts his backpack away and KAPOW giant hole in the middle of his shirt. He has no idea how it happened and I am left in disbelief. Normally this would be the end of this shirt, but hold on to your horses friends, I have a trick that will blow. your. mind!
Start by digging through any scraps of fabric you have leftover from previous projects. I happened to have this super hero fabric leftover from his Christmas present fiasco. I found an intact Spiderman square and so I cut it out. Never mind that it is like 40x bigger than the hole, I am calling that extra insurance against future holes. Now here it is the moment you’ve all been waiting for…Steam a Seam! That’s right, this is the glue that holds this trick together!!
All you have to do it cut a piece of fabric large enough to cover the hole. Cut a piece of the steam a seam the same size. Attach the fabric to the steam a seam (one side basically falls off- that’s the side that goes on the patch fabric), and then peel off the other side of the paper backing and stick it on your clothes. At this point it is still totally movable so if you’re like me and you didn’t quite cover ALL of the hole the first time, it’s ok! Once you get it where you want it, take your hot iron and press that bad boy on there. Give it a couple of sprays of steam (ya know, because it is “steam” a seam) and you are done!
Now if you’re not sure that this will stand up to your little one, you can run a zig zag stitch around the edge which helps give it a little more lasting power.
This whole process takes under 10 minutes and when it’s all over your child gets a new shirt! Last year for Christmas I bought a 5 pack of colored hanes t-shirts for my son and did this exact process with different super heroes. He LOVES that they are custom shirts with all his favorite folks! So, don’t wait for your kids to put a hole in something to try this method! It is totally idiot proof (I mean even I can do it) and you will look like a sewing master to your kids and their friends (and well their friends mom’s too)! That is a total win!
