I had a rare break in my usually crazy life on Monday. My sweet hubby was home sick from work and decided to take a nap while our littlest was also napping. Somehow I managed to pawn off the middlest on him as well with the promise of cartoons and papa snuggles in our big bed and found myself all alone! I decided to finish up one of those projects that has been sitting on my to do list forever and I knew would only take 10 minutes once I actually got started.
I am a beginner sewer (I managed to mess up a pattern designed for kids to use). I am way more of a fly by the seat of my pants sewer. I don’t measure, I don’t press seams, and I rarely use pins…it’s amazing I can make anything! So when I tell you these ice pack pockets are EASY, trust me!
I don’t have any pictures of the during process (still getting used to the idea of blogging and taking 500 pics of everything I do!), but let me talk you through it. The first thing you need to do is pick your fabric, I had some leftover fabric from my sons pajama pants, half a pillow case and the feet from some socks I turned into baby legs.
You want to start with your two pieces of fabric (right sides together) about 7″ by 10″-12″ depending on the size of your baggies. Sew along the two long sides and one of the short sides. Then you turn it right side out, and depending on your personal sewing style you can either fold the unfinished edges under and pin it, press it or just run it through the machine to close the bag (you’ll never guess which I do…).
And now, the last step (see I told you it was easy!). Fold the bottom up, leaving about an inch along the top…now, fold the top down on top of the bottom half, like this…and sew all the way down both sides!
Then you just fill your baggies with your ice pack solution (2 parts water, 1 part rubbing alcohol and enough food coloring to remind you not to drink it!) and put them in! I double bagged my ice packs and used packing tape to seal them shut, but I also have a very naughty curious middle daughter!
The other style I made was using the feet off of a pair of knee high socks I turned into baby legs for my littlest. I couldn’t bear to get rid of them, I knew they had to have a purpose…and this is it! I simply slipped my ice pack baggie in the foot and sewed it shut with a really basic straight stitch. Then for good measure (and extra protection from the cold) I slipped that foot into the other one, folded the raw edges under and sewed it shut! Easy peasy!

Wow! I came across your post via The CSI Project, and I am loving what I’m seeing! Not being a big seamstress myself the simplicity of this project is definitely a plus. That, and the fact that I was planning on buying new ice packs soon makes this project definitely a top ten for my to-do list. Thanks for the inspiration and instructions!

Thanks so much! I am so happy that my mediocre sewing skills are inspiring you! I am not perfect, and the things we create don’t have to be either!! Good luck!
