So I have told you before about my LOVE for the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, but let me just say it again. That place is the best! This project was made using exclusively supplies I bought there and cost me only $12!! Seriously! Three hat racks for $12, unbelievable!
It all started with my hubby’s overwhelming hat collection, he seriously own like 20 baseball (or whatever the grown up version is called) hats! They were overtaking every flat surface in our bedroom and so he asked if I would make him a hat rack. I was stoked, mostly because he never asks me to make anything! I thought and pinterested and thought some more about what I wanted them to look like. I think he gave up on them ever happening because it took me so long to come up with an affordable vision! But then one night we were wandering around the ReStore talking about what we would do when/if we ever bought our own house and I saw them! These awful laminate white cabinet fronts and I knew…this was it!
They weren’t marked so I drug them up front to the register and asked what the wanted. Prepared for some ridiculous price I was shocked when he said $4 for all three! Sold! By then my mind was whirling, and i started wandering the aisles with a purpose. I started digging through the tile section and found these tiny tiles which wouldn’t you know it fit perfectly in rows inside the inset of the cabinet. Like it was meant to be! Of course, I bought ALL of them! 🙂
The larger tiles were nothing fancy, nothing special and they didn’t actually fit in the groove, but I figured that since I was finally making the hat racks, hubby would be willing to cut them down for me! Plus they were only $0.10 each! Score! Lastly I needed the actually hangers. I had visions of spigots glass door knobs and even cool gears, but those things were not in my budget. However these closet door knobs were marked at $1 each and they were 50% off! So that made that an easy decision!
Now, you would think since I was soooo close to having those hat racks done my hubby would have rushed home and cut those tiles immediately. Well, he didn’t. And they sat uncut for months. All the while with him asking when I was going to finish those hat racks! Finally they were cut and I was ready to go!
I used some paint I had on hand from the Home Depot oops rack (seriously nothing beats a jar of paint for $0.50) and gave those babies a good thick coat. Now, here is where you can learn from my mistake. I just brushed that paint straight on, no sanding, no nothing. And wouldn’t you know it, because that surface was soooo smooth that paint took FOREVER to dry! Like literally a week. This was quickly becoming an awful, awful project!
Finally, once they were dry, I popped the tiles in and glued them down with some gorilla glue (just to be safe). I attached the hinges and up they went! Now we have moved several time since then and every time we move it become my hubby’s “fun” game to see how long it takes me to hang them up in our new house. Well I am happy to say, they went up yesterday! Only 10 days after moving in! That might be a new record! Yeah me!!
