For as long as my hubby and I have been together our frequently used spices have lived either on the back of the stove or on top of the fridge. Neither of these options are particularly attractive, but they are super convenient. I do 99% of all the cooking in our house, but we both love lots of spices and bold flavors so our spice collection is a bit overwhelming. It literally takes up an entire shelf in one of our huge cupboards. A while back my hubby and I picked up a bunch of spices from winco’s bulk food section and so we invested in a bunch of matching spice jars. Originally I had wanted to get fun and funny mis matching shakers, but my hubby thought that sounded weird.
As for the spice storage I knew that I wanted something that was going to be fun to look at and also practical. Then i started working on my kids bathroom and I realized that the super weird bathroom storage cupboard (that was in a really bizarre spot anyways) that they were not using was the perfect size to house all of our spice collection. So down it came and off to paint it went.
I am a huge sucker for free things (really, who isn’t) and so anytime ace has their free paint Saturday event I hurry in. Now usually I don’t have a specific project in mind, but I can’t resist free paint. And this paint is AMAZING. It is their Clark and Kensington brand and it is a paint and primer in one. So last spring (seriously a year ago!) I picked up a quart of “dried leaves” or something like that and then packed it around while we moved houses a couple of times. I loved the bright springy green of it and knew that I would definitely find a place for it. Then this project came up and i knew that it was meant to be.
I started brushing on the first coat. I am a terrible prepper so I didn’t do anything to get the wood ready for paint, I just dove right in! It ended up taking about three thin coats to get the coverage I was looking for, but I am super happy with how it turned out. I still need to paint the white and black details on it ( the back, shelf and fancy rails across the top), however it is already so much better then it was!
