When I only had one kid I used to love the holidays; the dressing up, pictures with giant costumed people, special treats, the whole thing. As the number of kids has grown I find myself less and less excited about the commercialization of the holidays. It seems like there is always some reason to buy this and give them that. That’s one of the reasons I am so big into knock offs! I want my kids to enjoy the holidays, but I’m not willing to break the bank or load them up in sugar to do it. So when I saw these personalized Easter Buckets on the Pottery Barn Kids website I knew that they were the perfect knock off for Easter.
I ended up finding these metal pails at the dollar store and even though they were printed with other images I saw their potential. I grabbed three and started plotting their transformation. Each pail had a different colored handle and so I wrapped each handle up in plastic (the dollar store bag actually) and then took them outside to spray paint them. I decided to do all of them the same antique white color and figured I would add some color with their names.
Now if I had a fancy cutting machine I would have cut their names out of some vinyl and that would have been the end of it, but I still haven’t managed to win a silhouette (despite trying ALL THE TIME) so I went with plan b. I very carefully spray painted a section of each pail a different color, just big enough to fit each of my kids names in. While that was drying I used my Slice machine to cut each individual letter out of contact paper. When the colored spray paint was dry I stuck the letters on their respective pails and then sprayed ANOTHER layer of the antique white over top of that.
When that layer was dry I carefully peeled the letters off with tweezers and gave the whole thing a coat of clear protective spray. It should be able to withstand a few Easter celebrations I hope and they aren’t too big so it won’t take much to make them look life they are overflowing with goodies!
How about you, are you planning on giving your kids Easter baskets? What do you put in them?
