I’ve told you all before that I lived in Hawaii for a couple of years while I went to college there. It was an amazing experience! I grew up in a super small town of only about 400 in Eastern Washington. We had super hot summers and super cold winters and by the time I was “all grown up” I was ready for a change. I moved there without ever visiting, knowing no one and with everything I owned packed in my suitcases. It was incredible! I spent my first year living in the dorms and going to school, but at the end of my first year I was ready to move out into my own place. In order to do this I had to get a job. I decided early on in my job hunt that I wanted to work at the Hard Rock Cafe. Unfortunately the first time I went in to apply they told me that I had to be 19 to work there. I was bummed, but I didn’t let that deter me! I went back on my 19th birthday to fill out a job application. I made contact with the manager and made sure she knew just how much I wanted to work there. My determination and perseverance were totally what got me that job!
It was an incredible work environment. I was encouraged to sing and dance at the hostess podium. We even got to dance on the bar and there were some pretty amazing musicians (Pink, Simple Plan, Vince Neil) that I got to meet along the way. One of the best parts was being a part of peoples vacation memories. People who come to Hawaii want to experience the full tropical experience and the Hard Rock did not disappoint! We had one drink in particular that was a tropical favorite and that was the Lava Flow. It’s a combination of a Strawberry Daiquiri and a Pina Colada. I was looking for an easy way to recreate this fun island drink for the summer without having to break out the blender every time I wanted to make one. Then I realized that the answer to my problems was a cream soda!
Tropical Lava Flow Italian Soda
- Ice
- 3 Tbsp Strawberry Syrup
- 3 Tbsp Silk coconut milk
- Club Soda
Start by adding the strawberry syrup to your glass. Slowly pour the club soda in until it is about 1 inch from the top of the glass. Add in your coconut milk and then finish it off by adding in your ice. If you add your ice first as you pour the warm ingredients over it it will start to melt immediately. If you add it last, then you will preserve some of the ice’s integrity and it will stay cubed longer! Finish it off with a sliced strawberry garnish and a fun colored straw and you will be instantly transported to the islands!
