OH my goodness you guys! I have seriously been SO swamped with back to school planning for both myself and my kids that I haven’t hardly had a minute to breathe. I have a fun and easy chalkboard sandwich box project for you a day early this week because my hubby is officially on his vacation from work, which means that he is going to be home with the little ones while I frantically attempt to get my classroom ready for school (only 2 weeks until we start!!!!) I’m also sharing this project as part of Emily over at The Benson Street’s Back to School series. All of the projects in this series are linked up at the end of my post so make sure you check them out!
I was grabbing some stuff for my classroom at the dollar store the other day and saw these cute little sandwich containers. I had the worst luck with sandwich containers last year for my son (they all just kept cracking and breaking!!) so I didn’t want to spend a bunch of money on new ones this year and this seemed like a brilliant solution. It was kind of plain jane though and I thought it needed a little sprucing up.
I started by taking the lid off and sticking some blue painters tape around the edge of the recess on the lid. It was already a square shape with a perfect edge to follow so taping it only took me about 30 seconds. I then grabbed a can of chalkboard spray paint. Side note: have you used the chalkboard spray paint yet? It is like seriously the most amazing thing I think I’ve ever seen. You spray it on and no joke, like 5 minutes later it is totally ready to go. No messy brushes or brush strokes, just awesomeness. Anyway, I gave it a quick spray and let it dry for about 5 minutes. Then did another coat and let it dry overnight (mostly because it was late and I was tired.)
I peeled the tape back and voila! instant lunch note surface. I am excited about this because I love the idea of leaving my son lunch box notes, but I NEVER remember to actually do it. Morning time is too crazy around here. This was it is smacking me in the face as i make lunch to quickly scrawl a note on the lid before I throw it in his lunch bag.
If you are looking to add a little more love to your child’s lunch box check out this post!

Hmm, interesting idea! And, when you think of it, it’s a more eco-friendly way to leave notes for your kid than printing them out. 🙂
