It’s that special time of year again! I am going to be sharing a quick and easy gift idea every Wednesday from now until Christmas! So don’t forget to come back each week, or check out all them right here!
I don’t wear makeup very often in my real life, although that changed when I went back to work full time this fall, but every time I pull out my makeup bag my girls appear out of nowhere and beg for me to put some on them. I am not one to let my girls wear real makeup (they are still SO little), but it got me thinking about how I could indulge them without ending up with my own Honey Boo Boo. That’s when I dreamed up this DIY makeup!
I started off by grabbing an eye shadow palate that had six different openings. If you don’t have an old one lying around you can pick one up at the dollar store for, well, a dollar. You will also need something small and sharp like a knife to pop each eye shadow out and enough different colored nail polishes to fill each color spot on your eye shadow tray. I was worried that I would use up an entire bottle of polish filling them up so I picked up a couple of extras (at the dollar store again). However, each tray didn’t even make a dent in a bottle so rest easy you can probably complete this project using only stuff you have already on hand!
The first step was popping all those eye shadows out of the case. You will simply pop the tip of your knife under one corner of the shadow and gently pry it up. They are stuck in there with a tiny dab of glue and don’t take much force at all to get out. Now if you are super prepared you can stick those shadow colors onto another surface and continue to use them (like this) or just toss them in the trash.
Once your palate is free of real eye shadow it’s time to get busy pouring your polish! I picked six fun colors that could double as lipstick, blush and eye shadow since I haven’t yet figured out how to make a realistic fake lipstick. yet. I simply poured each color into a tray and waited for it to dry. Now here is where it gets interesting. Because the nail polish is being poured in fairly thick it takes DAYS to completely dry. While it is drying it will smell like an open bottle of polish (so don’t do this project in your dining room) because, well, it is in essence like having an open bottle of polish lying around. Also, I discovered that despite filling each tray up to the tippy top as it dried the polish shrank and so I had to repeat this pour and fill process three separate times before it was the level I wanted it.
Presto change-o! Once it was finally all said and done it was perfect! Honestly it came out better in real life than it did even in my head. Don’t you love it when that happens! I now have the perfect go to gift for all the little girls in my daughters lives as well as earning coolest mom on the block status from my 4 year old!

This is such a cute and easy idea. I’m glad you gave the warning about how long it takes to dry and that it requires more than one pouring though since it wouldn’t have occurred to me until I was doing it! Thank you so much for linking your post up at This Is How We Roll Thursday.
