I’ve been a fan of big earrings as long as I can remember. The bigger, the flashier the more fun they are the more often I am likely to wear them. It’s probably one of the reasons I started making earrings a couple of years ago. The only problem with having an obsession with earrings, is finding a stylish way to store them. I started off by making some embroidery hoop earring holders a decade ago out of plain round hoops and window screen, but as the years went on the screen stretched and ended up with a much looser fit inside the hoop. Not to mention that those plain wooden hoops weren’t doing it for my decor style. Then I found this amazing, HUGE oval shaped hoop at a thrift store and knew that it had to come home with me (like this one). Amazingly enough in that same trip I found an awful lace skirt that was about 800 times to big for me and had no chance for a refashion. It did however spark a crazy idea. If you don’t happen to have a bunch of lace lying around you can go and pick up half a yard at your local fabric store (or here) and still do this project.
I started off by painting the wood on my hoops two different colors. I used a dark blue on the outer hoop and a lighter version of the same color on the inner hoop. These were just some oops test pots that I picked up at Home Depot for 50 cents each, so I can’t give you an exact color, but I can urge you to check the paint department counter for these killer deals any and every time you have to run the store! Once the paint had dried I cut a section of the lace to approximately the same size as my hoop, adding a couple of inches all the way around so that I wouldn’t struggle with getting a tight fit.
I put the bottom hoop on the floor and laid the lace on top of it. Then I gently laid the top hoop over the top and started tightening it. When I had a fairly tight fit, I began pulling the lace taut inside the hoops. as I got a tighter and tighter fit I slowly tightened the hoops together until the lace was pulled firmly across the entire opening and the hoops were as tight as they could possible get.
The I simply stuck a tack in the wall and hung my hoop up. I added my earrings (which used to take up 4 of the smaller round hoops) and then I stood back and admired it. It’s been hanging in my bedroom for 4 years now and in all that time the lace hasn’t loosened or moved at all. There are enough variations in the size of the opening that even the trickiest pairs of earrings (you know those ones that fasten back on themselves) have a place to call home on this display. It makes picking out the right pair of earrings a breeze as well, because they are all right there in front of me and I am not digging through a pile of tangled earrings looking for the match!
So if you have an earring lover in your life, whip up one of these super simple earring displays and help keep their collection well organized and beautiful! Check out all my easy gift ideas right here!
