I have been preparing like crazy for holiday parties and seasonal get togethers and although appetizers are my usual go to potluck contribution I have been venturing out into the land of desserts lately. I am a huge fan of bite sized snack balls, I’ve shared them so many times before (here, here, here and here) that I thought I would try my hand at whipping up some OREO cookie balls. The cookie balls themselves only take three ingredients and with just two more you can turn those balls into mini pumpkins in no time at all! I grabbed all my ingredients on a whim while picking up my husbands glasses from Walmart the other night. That’s how I roll, nothing like spur of the moment dessert making!
OREO Cookie Balls
- 1 pkg (8 oz.) brick cream cheese, softened
- 36 OREO Cookies, finely crushed (about 3 cups)
- 4 pkg. (4 oz. each) semi-sweet white baking chocolate, melted
Optional Ingredients
- Pretzel sticks
- Food coloring (I used 8 drops of red and 14 drops of yellow to make my orange)
- Green sugar crystal sprinkles
Start by mixing the cream cheese and cookie crumbs until blended. Then shape the dough into 48 (1-inch) balls. I stuck my broken pretzel sticks in at this point so that they would be sturdier when it came time to dip them. Then stick them in the freezer for at least 10 min.
While the balls are hardening melt your chocolate according to the package and mix in the food coloring. Dip balls in melted chocolate using the pretzels as a handle. I found that the best way to get this done was to go directly down and then back up, if I tried to twirl the ball the pretzel fell out and I was left with a delicious (but ugly) ball that I had to eat. Once they are dipped place them in single layer in shallow waxed paper-lined pan and sprinkle with green sugar crystals immediately. You will need to keep them in the fridge until about 30 minutes before you want to enjoy them!
I love that as I was adding them to my serving dish I kept thinking that it was just like going to the pumpkin patch with my own kids. Some of the pumpkins were big and some small, some were lumpy and some were smooth. No matter which one you picked though, they were all delicious on the inside. I took these to a house warming party with friends and everyone raved about them. They marveled at the fact that even though I have three kids and a full time teaching job I was able to create such a cute and yummy snack. So I promise you, if I can do it, you can too!
