I realized not too long ago that I might be failing as a Betty Crocker mom type because my kids were asking me to make cinnamon rolls, only they didn’t know what they were called. I grew up with a mom who owned her own cafe when I was young and worked as a baker for a dozen years of her life. My sister has worked for some of the best bakeries in Portland, OR and yet, my poor sweet kids don’t know what cinnamon rolls are. Ugh…the shame I am bringing to my family! 😉 Well that might be a little dramatic, but it definitely made me realize that I might need to start including them in some more kitchen adventures. If you’ve been as reluctant as I to invite your kids into the kitchen I promise this recipe is the perfect place to start!
You will need to grab a couple of things from the store before you start.
- Pillsbury dough sheets
- Apple butter
- Ground cinnamon (you probably already have this one!)
- Cream cheese frosting
Now of course you are always welcome to make these things from scratch if you are so inclined, but you already know that I am not going to be doing that so I’ll own it! If you do choose to make some or all of these from scratch, well give yourself a pat on the back. Okay, back to the task at hand.
Unroll your dough sheet onto a lightly floured cutting board. Let one of your kids spread apple butter all over it! Not toooooo thick, but really this part is pretty much fail proof.
Then, let another kid (or the same one if you only have one, whatevs) sprinkle the cinnamon over the top of the apple buttered dough sheet. Now comes the tricky part…just kidding, there is no tricky part. Roll that bad boy up into an apple, cinnamon dough log. Slice into 1″ rounds and place them on your greased baking sheet.
Bake them according to the directions. While they are baking pull that frosting/icing onto the counter and let it soften up a little bit.
Once your rolls are out of the oven and just cool enough to move onto a cooling rack, spread that gooey white stuff all over the top. It is best to do it while they are still warm so it melts a little bit and fills in all those crevices and when it hardens its like a sugar shell on the top of your roll. Wait until they are cool enough to eat and then let your kids rip that soft doughy, apple cinnamon goodness apart and enjoy!
