Ever since I went back to work my craft room/office had become a dumping ground for everything we didn’t want to deal with. Clothes the kids had outgrown, craft supplies on every surface, massage table in the closet, it was a hot mess! So I decided that while I was home on winter break I would organize it.
The first thing I did was take a trip to Ikea to pick up some storage shelves. I’d been looking at both the kallax and the trofast lines and I was totally sold on the kallax until I got there. After spending a ridiculous amount of time weighing the pros and cons of each I settled on the trofast. I liked the option of customizing the drawers to fit my needs. I worried about things getting buried in pretty cube bins and I knew that it wouldn’t be a successful solution for me long term.
They were super easy to build and I had all of them built and in the closet within an hour. After that came the tedious task of filling them. Some were obviously easier than others, pens, pencils and other office supplies, baby food jars, jewelry making supplies. And there were some that were really a hodgepodge of things. I sorted them out and then labeled them using my sweet new label machine I told you about here.
Once the shelves were empty and the closet was full and well organized I started on the walls. I removed all the brackets from the shelves and patched the plaster on the wall. I touched up the paint and then started on the gallery wall. I’ve been working on the wall for a couple of years now. As I’ve slowly been removing shelves I’ve been filling up the wall space with colorful frames and funky storage. Once I had everything off that wall the final pieces seemed to come together and the wall basically finished itself. I also moved the awesome Wallternatives decal I got over to the space. It’s nice to be able to see my week at glance with I am sitting at my desk. It also sticks so much better to the smooth door than it did the bumpy wall.
Now while I was doing this project I was also working on our walk in pantry. We had been storing an old dresser in that space for a couple of months and I decided to repurpose it into a permanent light box and photo prop station. I set up my light box and lights on top and then tucked all my staging supplies into the drawers. It’s so nice having all that stuff in one place instead of scattered around the house.
Right next to that is my sewing table. I am not an exceptionally good seamstress, but I do like to do some small projects every once in a while.
Then comes the necessary evil section. I’ve got a filing cabinet filed with paper. Sorted by weight and color. And a fun retro dresser that I resurfaced with lace. The drawers hold all of my fabric and sewing supplies and I keep a drawer of unfinished projects so if I every get the urge to sew I can just come work on something easily. My printer and Silhouette machine live up on top. The are both within easy reach of my desk and yet tucked up and away.
My desk is one of my favorite parts of this room. When we got or new dining room table I took our old one to use as a desk. My hubby was very confused because it was a table and it didn’t have drawers but I knew it was perfect. I’m pretty good at keeping these areas neat and I try really hard to put things back where they belong when I am done with them. Although I love being able to spread out all kinds of stuff while I am working on a project without having to rearrange everything that is already there.
