I don’t know about you, but one of my favorite things to do when I am looking to unwind is to window shop. I could spend hours picking out clothes I’ll never buy, shoes I’ll never wear and jewelry I can’t afford. jewelry is my weakness. Like a huge weakness. Earrings specifically. I’ve shown you my massive earring collection before (HERE) and I can’t help but want to add to that collection at every turn. I go back and forth between studs and dangles. Usually I feel like the bigger the better, but sometimes there is something to be said for an understated pair of earrings. Today’s post is not that pair.
I spotted these fringe earrings in my Pinterest feed and immediately clicked over to Etsy to get a better view. I realized pretty quickly that I could make myself a pair fairly simply with materials I already had on hand. Those are the best projects, the ones that use up supplies I already have and don’t cost me any money. Even if you had to go buy all of these things though, it wouldn’t be more than a few dollars.
Supplies
- Earring Hooks
- Beads
- Embroidery Thread
Start by cutting two pieces (about 6 inches each) from each color. You could choose any colors you like, I went with a mix of rich fall colors interspersed with pops of bright colors. Separate them into two equal groups and then thread them through the loop at the bottom of the earring hook. Use a separate piece of thread to tie them all together at the top.
Now you get to do the fun stuff. Choose a few pieces at random to string some of your beads on. You can do one color of beads, you can choose a few different colors, you can mix and match and keep it totally random or whatever your heart desires. And remember, if you hate it, you can always slide them off and start over. That’s the best part about making your own jewelry, you can change it to suit you exactly.
I had some pieces of chain in with all my jewelry supplies, leftover from a necklace that had broken months (maybe even years) ago. I attached a couple of pieces of that chain onto the earring hook and instantly fell in love with the slightly industrial, slightly hippie, mostly awesome earrings I had just created. It took me a total of about 15 minutes to cut, string, bead and admire my new earrings.
