Hi everyone! It’s Elizabeth, back again from the Yellow Elm blog. I recently visited a wholesale flower market in Seattle and picked up a few bunches to make a bouquet for my kitchen. I am NOT a flower-arranging expert, but I took a class a few years ago, and a few tips stuck with me that I want to share.
1) Cut your stems to match your vase: tall stems in a tall vase; short stems in a short vase. For some reason picking the right vase had always puzzled me before I took the class, and that tip solved it.
2) Criss-cross the stems as you add them to the vase. This will make your arrangement secure, and you’ll have a solid web of flowers to build your arrangement just the way you want.
3) Use 3 kinds of flowers: one for a focal point, one as a complement, and one filler. Remembering this tip has helped me know how to pick out flowers from all the beautiful options!
The bouquet I made turned out a little crazy, but it had just the right dose of summer to go with my mood.
Wishing you a summer filled with pretty bouquets!

I had no idea about the criss crossing the flowers but it definitely makes sense to have that serve as a sort of base! Flower arranging is an art! Thanks so much for sharing!

Thanks for the tip to be careful about how you cut the stems. I think there’s a fine line between too short and too long. I think this is just as important as choosing the right flower for your vase.
