I am so excited to share this post with you! I have a deeeeeep love of tie dye, and I have had really young kids for the past forever (not really, but it certainly feels like it), and let’s be real, the two don’t mix. While I was at SNAP I connected with I Love to Create who just happened to have an amazing tie dye booth set up. I may have scored an entire case of tie dye kits and I’ve been itching to open them up ever since. I am in the middle of next month’s craft challenge project (HINT: kids crafts) and so I decided to amp up the fun of that project with a little tie dye magic.
I started off with these awesome drawstring backpacks from Oriental Trading Company. They are lightweight and durable and they are the perfect size for kids. I wrote each of my kids names on a bag and then handed them a pile of rubber bands and told them to get busy wrapping, bunching and tying them up however they wanted. I ended up with a good mix of easy kid patterns.
My oldest wanted to do a tradition striped rainbow so he rolled his bag horizontally and added 7 rubber band sections. My middle daughter wanted to do sunbursts so we grabbed up sections of the bag and banded them tightly. My littlest decided that stripes were going to be easier for her to do so we wrapped her bag up vertically and added about 10 rubber band sections.
There are a lot of different styles you can go with and depending on the age of your kids you may be able to venture out into some really interesting techniques.
Now once they were all banded off we got started on the tie dying. I decided to have them work one at a time so that we could try and control the amount of dye we got on ourselves and our yard. I wish I had pictures of this part, but alas my hands were covered in tie dye and I was very much preoccupied!
Once they were all dyed, we tied them up in plastic bags and set them out in the sun to dry out and soak up! The next day I rinsed them and threw them in the washer and dryer. Then…magic!!! I absolutely love how they turned out!
