One of my favorite times of year is back to school time. It is always has such a bright, new beginnings feel and it for me has always been much more of a fresh start than new years. Now this might be because even after high school I was in college, and after that I worked in child care, and then stayed at home with my kids and now back to school as a teacher. So the beginning of the school year is a wonderful time of year. It is a time for structure and routine and I may be a bit of a control freak so I love that!
I always try and make my kids something a little bit fun and different for the start of each school year. I want them to think about that time of year with happy memories of school and learning. However this year my middle daughter starts kindergarten so there is twice the stuff to make. I decided to keep it simple by turning their ordinary pencils into special one of a kind ones.
I wrapped some with this fun super hero washi tape and the others with this perfect fairy tale one. It was as simple as cutting off a piece of tape the same length as my pencil. Then I laid the tape sticky side up and placed my pencil so the bottom of the eraser lined up with the short edge of the tape. Then I just wrapped it up like a roll of sushi. Mmmm, sushi…
I also had a bunch of printed Easter pencils that I picked up after Easter this year. I stuck them eraser end down in a piece of foam and painted them a couple different colors of my favorite satin paint from DecoArt.
Then once they were dry I wrapped them in a few different patterns of washi tape.
The different colors underneath gave me a couple of options for each tape and I love how they turned out. I’m pretty sure those ones are going to make their way to my teacher desk!
