I shared the first part of my living makeover a few weeks ago and I’ve got the second step in the process up today. This was the easiest, fastest and most impressive change I’ve made so far!
When my husband and I moved in together there were definitely some compromises that had to be made furniture and design wise. One of the battles I let him win early on was the curtains, and this was mostly because I didn’t own any curtains. He had purchased these curtains when he first had his own place, and to be fair they totally fit with his design style. I’ve made them work with our decor for the past 7 years, but I’ve recently been going through this intense need to make some serious (and not so serious) changes to update our home and find the vibe that’s been missing. These curtains were DEFINITELY on the list! You can see them in this progress shot of my bookshelf makeover.
I started by searching my Pinterest boards for images of living rooms that had a similar vibe to what I was looking for and then trying to pick out the key features that the curtains had in common.Once I had a list of things I liked I started searching!
Key features
- light-colored, preferably a white background
- small to medium size print
- in my color palate, blue and green
My searches led me to Minted, a company I worked with last summer to create this fun gallery wall in my dining room. I knew that their customer service was excellent, and the quality was unbeatable. They hand make all of their textiles when you order them, which I love. There is no machine or mass production feel to their products and the quality of the fabric is absolutely luxurious.
I narrowed it down to my top three choices and then asked one of my closest girlfriends to weigh in. She knows my hubby pretty well and so she was the best resource for this task. See my husband is a little resistant to change, and he hates looking at a bazillion samples. In fact, if I try to bring up changing anything, he gets a little defensive and doesn’t understand why anything has to change. However, he is super laid back and if I do change things he usually rolls with it, and sometimes he even agrees that the change was a good thing.
Watercolor Pines, Roost, Spring Floral
After she looked at them and we weighed his dislike levels for each one I opted for the Watercolor Pines in Navy. It met all my criteria with its white background, and medium blue print. It was soft enough for me, but didn’t scream girly or frou frou, which is a must for my husband. Because the curtains are handmade, I had to wait extra long for them (like 3 whole weeks!!) and that was almost impossible! However, one they arrived it was 5 minutes until I had them hung and was basking in their glory! It is amazing what a difference a simple change like going from a dark curtain to a light one made! My living room instantly felt bigger and cleaner, and anything that makes my house feel cleaner is a win in my book!
How about you, do you have curtains you love in your home? Did you pick them out or are they remnants from a previous time? I’d love to see pictures of your living room, email them to me at ashley@mycraftilyeverafter.com and I’ll share some of them on my social media!!
