Back to school is rapidly approaching, we have about a month before the school year starts and this year I am getting a jump on my back to school prep. Maybe it’s because my kids don’t have a school supply list this year, maybe it’s because my classroom room has been under construction for the ENTIRE summer so I can’t go in and work on it. Either way, it means my kids are getting more of my love and craftiness!
Every Friday at all our local schools we have school pride day, and every Friday my kids complain about not having any school spirit gear. I decided that this year I was going to change that! All of my kids have extremely sensitive skin and so I try to buy them clothes that aren’t going to irritate their skin or hold on to any allergens. Sometimes when you are buying school gear, you have no control over the material or the process that it goes through to get that fancy image on it. However, I recently got a Cricut Explore Air and it has changed my life! I picked up a five pack of plain white t-shirts and whipped up this fancy design in the design space.
I had a bunch of heat transfer vinyl lying around from projects over the years and this was the perfect use for it! This was also a great excuse to learn how to use a new (to me) feature in the design space, the slice tool! I am not going to lie, I still have no idea how it works, but it does and that’s what matters! The first thing I did was build my design. I knew I wanted a GIANT “M” as the background with the words on top of it. I also knew I wanted to cut the middle of the M out so that I wasn’t layering the vinyl. I had no idea how to make that happen, but a lot of button clicks and mistakes along the way and I figured it out.
I started by adding a shape to my design, a white rectangle in the exact size and shape I wanted. I placed it over the M and then held down the shift key so they were both selected. THEN I clicked on teh slice button at the top of the layers menu. Once I did that I had like 4 new layers. Each of those layers was a part of the design where the box and the M met. I clicked on the layers one at a time and X’d them away until all I was left with was the three layers I wanted.
Once that was all done it was time to cut. I thought I was going to have to separate them to cut them, but that Cricut program is so smart it automatically put them on separate mats when I clicked the GO button! So I loaded my glittery red for the M and then some solid black for the words. Once they were all cut out I laid them on my shirt, got them just where I wanted them and then ironed them in place! BAM! School spirit gear for my kids!
In order to keep their clothes soft and clean and allergen free (including cat and dog dander, dust mite matter, ragweed, grass, and tree pollen) I wash them with all® free clear liquid. Actually, I wash everyone’s clothes with that. And everyone’s bedding. We have three cats and they tend to leave their hair (and dander) everywhere, and since I am allergic to cats I need a serious laundry detergent that will remove that nasty, itchy eye and throat causing stuff from even my fluffiest blankets. Not only is it the #1 detergent recommended by Dermatologists, Allergists, and Pediatricians for Sensitive Skin, but it is also sold at every single store I shop at, so I can get it at Safeway while I’m getting groceries! There are no special trips required when we are running low. When I’m feeling extra fancy I like to pair it with the all® free clear dryer sheets to get a super soft and luxurious feel! Make sure you follow the package directions to get the best results!
